THE WINES OF GERMANY
Germany is one of the northernmost wine producing countries in the Northern hemisphere. In this cool climate elegant wines are produced with moderate alcohol and refreshing acidity. The country is divided into 13 quality wine regions. Wines from these regions are labelled “Qualitätswein bestimmter Anbaugebiete (QbA)”. They come in a wide range of wine styles: white, rosé, red, sparkling, dry, off-dry and sweet wine. Key factors are rivers (e.g. Rhein, Mosel, Ahr) and mountains (e.g. Haardt, Hunsrück) which results in unique micro-climates and extraordinary wines. Germany also has some of the steepest vineyards in the world (e.g. the Bremmer Calmont vineyard, with a gradient of up to 60%) which means that in many cases picking the grapes by hand is the only option.
German wine is typically associated with Riesling. This grape produces crisp wines with lots of citrus and green fruit aromas. Also more ripe styles – with aromas of stone and tropical fruit – are produced and even age worthy wines that will last for decades (!). World class red wines are produced from Spätburgunder (i.e. Pinot Noir). They are made in a Burgundian style. Oak is used with great subtlety resulting in fruity and refined wines.
